Both sides had horses, but the Saxons travelled on them, and then got off to fight on foot! Norman horses were carefully looked after, and were well known for their strength and speed. |

The Normans had many archers,
while the Saxons appear to have had few.
Archers had wooden bows made from a single piece of wood, similar to a longbow. Many of the bows were probably the height of a man. They could easily annoy the enemy and cause lots of damage, even (perhaps) killing a King! |
They fought for the money, and if it looked like William was losing the battle could change sides.
